Tile Maintenance and Care

Posted by creatingyourspace under Care and Maintenance, Tile

Tile is a beautiful addition to any home. Though tile is extremely durable and low maintenance, it should still be cared for overtime. If you have ceramic or porcelain tile, we put together some simple and easy maintenance to practice on your flooring. Remember, grout can be a little trickier and will take some more in-depth techniques to clean.

Ceramic vs. Porcelain

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are both made from clays. Porcelain clay is denser and less porous, so it typically more durable. Being less porous means it can be harder for water or soot to get deep into the tile as well. However, both tiles should be cleaned regularly to avoid build-up of unwanted grease and other residues.

Glazed Tiles

Glazed tiles can be easily cleaned by just using water without the need for soap. If liquids are spilled on the ceramic or porcelain tile, they should be cleaned quickly. Remember, ceramic is porous, which can allow liquids to penetrate through easily. If you spill a beverage on ceramic, it can quickly stain it if not removed promptly. Simply wipe away spills and add water to dilute. You can use a rag or paper towel to absorb all remaining liquid or residue.

Abrasive Tiles

For more abrasive tiles, consider using a mop or a bristled brush. Rinse your ground and mop with hot water. You can add a tile cleaning solution as well to help break down dirt and soot. You may want to go over your floor again with a clean water mop to ensure you eliminate all dirt in the area.

Polished Tiles

Polished tile can be very vulnerable to acidic products. Do not use acidic cleaner when cleaning polished ceramic or porcelain tiles. You will also want to immediately remove any spills or accidents with acidic liquids like citric fruits, wines, sodas, kinds of vinegar, and pet urine.

Glass Tiles

Never use an abrasive brush on glass tiles – this can scratch your tiles and be seen very easily. Remember this if you have glass as your backsplash as well. Many homes will use glass as a decorative accent in showers or in kitchen backsplashes. Simply, wipe clean with a damp sponge and pat dry.

Tiles are low maintenance and do not demand much work. However, it is essential to keep them clean to prevent the build-up of unwanted soot and grime. These simple tricks can be done whenever you feel like it is time to clean your floors.

Four Mistakes to Avoid When Installing Tile

Posted by creatingyourspace under Flooring, Hints and Tips, Tile

Are you planning on installing new tiles in the bathroom, kitchen, or bedroom? If so, you have already tackled half the challenge by purchasing a tile that you feel best fits your home’s interior. If you are thinking about cutting out the middleman and laying down the tile yourself, it is important to educate yourself about the process fully. If you are not a professional contractor, it is easy to make mistakes. While we always recommend going with one of our trusted professionals, we have you covered. Here are four mistakes that first-timers are bound to make:

Failing to Purchase Enough Tiles

Perhaps the biggest mistake that people make when launching a tiling project is failing to purchase enough tiles. There is nothing worse than seeing your tiling project coming together only to realize a little too late that you did not purchase enough tiles to complete the project. To ensure that you have enough tiles, be sure to get accurate measurements of the area you are tiling and purchase 10-15% tiles than you need just in case you make a mistake.

Inadequate Adhesive

When purchasing adhesive to hold your tiles together, it is crucial to invest in a quality adhesive. This is especially important if you are installing tiles in the kitchen or the bathroom. You will find that some adhesives are only manufactured for use on the floors or the walls. Therefore, be sure to select one that is tailored for your specific project. Also, you should choose an adhesive that has excellent waterproofing properties.

Working too Fast

It is easy to compromise quality with speed when you are taking on a tiling project by yourself. Sometimes you may become so fed up with the process that you find yourself getting a little careless. However, you should make sure you take your time, especially if you are working with decorative tiles. Use precision so that you will get the best results.

Uneven Distribution

If this is your first time laying down tiles, you might find it challenging to install them evenly. Use battens, which are thin wooden rods, to ensure that your tiles are equally spaced. If you are working with ceramic tiles, opt for order spacers to help you distribute them properly.

If you feel a little worried about this project, leave it to the professionals at Carpets N More. Our expert team is ready to take on your project and create your dream oasis. Do not hesitate; call us today!

Are you thinking about replacing your current flooring? If so, please keep in mind that choosing specific flooring can actually increase the value of your home. Your home is most likely the most substantial investment you will ever make. In fact, replacing your floors is a good thing that will not only fit your budget but will upgrade the design style of your home. Below, you will find some tips that will answer your questions and motivate you to start this project.

Hardwood Floors

Homebuyers will pay more for hardwoods because they are beautiful and timeless. Harwood offers many species and styles to fit any style. You can choose from Oak, Pine, Maple, Brazilian Cherry, Hickory, and many more. Harwoods are easy on your back and feet, compared to tile floors. Plus, they are easier to clean than carpet.

Natural Stone

Travertine, slate, and other natural stones are stylish, durable, and timeless. Not to mention, they are perfect for indoor and outdoor use. Natural stone is a product that blends well with other décor and flooring. It comes from the earth and has been around forever, and will continue to be popular!

Porcelain & Ceramic Tile

The toughest residential tile is porcelain tile. If you have children and animals, tile is your best bet. It is water-resistant and does not succumb to scratches. Tile is also beautiful and stylish. If you choose neutral colors like white, gray, and beige, they will mesh beautifully with your decorating style and other floorings.

Vinyl Flooring

With new technology, vinyl floors are quite the rage now. With improved printing processes, vinyl really looks like hardwood and tile floors. Vinyl plank flooring is installed by the individual planks, just like hardwood. Consider luxury vinyl tile (LVT); it is durable with fantastic style.

What Grout Color Should I Choose?

Posted by creatingyourspace under Tile

The idea of updating your home with beautiful new tile floors can be exciting. After all, when looking through tile samples, you will find that there is a plethora of materials, colors, and patterns available to you. Whether you are renovating your bathroom, kitchen or another area of the home, new tile floors will have a significant impact on your home’s design.

Believe it or not, the grout color that you choose can make or break the results of your tiling project. Selecting grout is an aspect of the design project that should not be overlooked. If you are asking, “so how do I choose the right grout color for my project?” We are here to help!

White Tile + Dark Colored Grout

White tile is a popular choice for bathrooms, kitchens and other common areas of the home. If you are considering installing a white tile and pairing it with a very dark grout, the actual focus falls on the grout as opposed to the tiles. Using a black or other deep-hued grout color with white tile helps inject energy and life into a basic patterned tile. Such a high contrast scheme is ideal for spaces where the dominant hues throughout the room are white and black such as a kitchen or bathroom.

Colorful Grout

If you are seeking a look that really pops, you might want to consider using a colorful grout as opposed to a dark or white grout contrast, which can be stark. For example, a colorful grout with white tiles is a fun, unique idea for a bathroom tiling project. Using a colorful grout is bold, but it can be pulled off successfully if that same grout hue is used somewhere else within the space.

Colored Tile + Light Grout

If you have decided to go with a colored tile product such as hunter green or a deep brown, you will find that moving away from a neutral grout color becomes a bit challenging. Using a lighter hue with colored tiles may seem dramatic, but it can help tame vibrancy and provide clean lines and a timeless look.

Colorful Tile + Colorful Grout

Pairing a bold tile product with a colorful grout is daring. If you are ever nervous about the outcome, remember that you can obtain grout color swatches to get an idea of how the project will look in the end. Doing so can be a helpful hack for anyone that wants to see how it will look before committing.

What are the craziest grout color and tile pairings that you have ever seen? We want to hear your stories below in the comment section.

Your Flooring Needs, Explained

Posted by creatingyourspace under Hardwood / Laminate, Tile, Vinyl

Have you ever been curious about your flooring options, but honestly, do not know where to start? As a first-time homeowner, things can seem overwhelming and daunting. We understand that there are a lot of products out there and you want to choose the right one. To help you in search, we created a simple guide with four popular flooring choices, explained. We hope that this helps you in your selection process!

Your Flooring Needs, Explained:

Hardwood.

  • We will begin by starting with the ever-so-coveted Hardwood flooring. Hardwood comes in two options: original hardwood (100% solid) and engineered hardwood (top layer is hardwood with solid backing). Both hardwood options have a seamlessly beautiful look, and they are a stunning addition in any space.
  • Original hardwood floors are typically best in rooms that do not produce a lot of humidity or moisture. That is where engineered hardwood takes the cake. Engineered wood has made it possible to add hardwood into areas that you never imagined possible. You can now have it in basements, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.
  • Keep in mind that hardwood is not the most durable flooring choice. Consumers often buy it for its beauty and craftsmanship, rather than its durability. Certain features can help protect your hardwood like hardness and the finishes’ protection level. But with all flooring, you want to be careful not the scratch or dent the flooring.

Luxury Vinyl Flooring.

  • This flooring is more durable than typical hardwood floors; therefore, it would work well in active homes. It is resistant to moisture and everyday wear and tear. Luxury Vinyl Flooring can be installed in moisture and humidity rooms (bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements), quite like engineered wood.
  • Luxury Vinyl Flooring has the look of stone or wood with ease of cleaning and durability. These floors are 100% waterproof to prevent swelling or buckling. This can be the perfect flooring option for families who need a little wiggle room. Plus, with a wide selection of styles, colors, and textures, you can meet any of your flooring needs with this one product.

Engineered Tile.

  • Engineered tile is made up of 70% limestone and 30% other durable materials. Engineered tile is an alternative solution to your traditional ceramic, porcelain or natural stone tile. Homeowners love engineered tile for its long-lasting characteristics as well as being warm and soft to the touch.
  • This type of flooring works well in high-moisture areas, and it even can be a great backsplash to your shower or kitchen wall. This flooring has extreme durability for high traffic areas, accidents, drops, and dirt. In fact, the grout is even stained resistant making it extremely user-friendly.

Laminate.

  • Laminate is a budget-friendly option for homeowners wanting the look of wood or stone. Plus, this flooring is easy to install and works in any room of your home.
  • This flooring has a durability feature helping it to withstand daily wear and tear. It even comes in a wide variety of colors, styles, textures, and looks.

Do any of these flooring types spark your interest? We would love to tell you more and show you our wide selection. Please stop by one of our showrooms or call us with any questions. We look forward to the opportunity to work with you!

What Should I Do About My Slippery Floors?

Posted by creatingyourspace under Tile

Tile floors are beautiful, durable and they can add exceptional style to your home, but how can something so attractive be potentially dangerous? Unfortunately, tile flooring accounts for many injuries due to slips and falls in homes across the world. If you are having trouble keeping your tile floors slip-free, we are here to help! Plus, you do not have to keep your tile floors covered with rugs to keep the floors safe. Let’s take a look!

Why Do Tile Floors Become Slippery?

There are several reasons why your floors may become slippery. Perhaps the biggest cause of slippery tiles is the failure to clean the surface properly. Slip and fall hazards occur when tile surfaces are not adequately cleaned or are not cleaned frequently. Additional causes include:

  • When the appropriate chemicals and tools are not used, it can damage the finish of the floor which makes it slippery.
  • Applying too many or not enough coats of finish to the floor
  • Using an oily or overused mop on the floor

How to Make Tile Floors Less Slippery

If your tile floors have become slippery, it is time to clean them thoroughly. Throw away any old or soiled dust mops, or you can rent a steam cleaner to remove the oils or product buildup from the tiles. When cleaning the floor, you should use oil-free products along with a grease-fighting cleaner such as dish detergent. You can use a clean sponge or mop to rinse the floors.

Applying an anti-slip product to your floors can also aid in making the surface less slippery. Many anti-slip products come in powder form and are designed to break down the oil and fats so that it can increase traction.  Use an acid-based product, or you can stick to hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a less expensive alternative which works by drying out the floor while sanitizing and deodorizing.

When using acid-based products to dry up the floors, you should allow it to soak into the tile so that it is effective. Do not leave the product on the tiles for more than fifteen minutes to avoid eroding the material. In extreme cases, a slippery floor may need to be completely stripped and refinished.

As always, we recommend checking with your flooring manufacturer before proceeding with any cleaning. Each flooring can be a little different in its needs and usage; therefore, you want to be sure that you use the correct products on your floors.

1. Patterns Please.

How to Properly Clean Your Tile Floors

Posted by creatingyourspace under Tile

After investing in gorgeous tile floors for your home, you want to keep them beautiful and in pristine condition. To help you keep your floors in tip-top shape, we have created a fast and easy guide for cleaning your tile floors. Let us get started!

How to Properly Clean Your Tile Floors:

Step No. One: Sweep or Vacuum

You will want sweep or vacuum your tile floors regularly to remove any dirt or debris from the top layer. The dirt can eventually dull the look of your tile; therefore, regular upkeep will help it look better for longer.

Step No. Two: Mop.

In a large bucket, mix together mild detergent with hot water. After, you will want to mop your entire tile floors with rag or chamois mop. Avoid using a sponge mop for this surface because it can get your dirty water into your grout line.

  • Pro-Tip: You will want to frequently change out the mop water whenever it begins to get cloudy or murky.

Step No. Three: Focus on The Grout

Grout is an important part of the overall look of your tile. A lot of homeowners will not focus on cleaning the grout and this will leave the tile look grungy and unkept. In fact, your grout can absorb a lot of unwanted stains, oils, and greases, but the solution is easy. You will want to create a natural paste by mixing together equal parts baking soda and water. Once you have mixed the ingredients into a paste, you will want to take a toothbrush and scrub it into the stained area. Let this mixture sit on the grout overnight. In the morning, you will want to take a “stiff nylon brush” and scrub the grouted area. If stains continue to persist, you can buy a silicone-based grout sealer to help avoid future staining.

Disclaimer: Before ever cleaning any of your floors, you will want to consult with the manufacturer’s guidebook or website. Each flooring can be a little different and you always want to make sure you are using the correct method.
