How to Properly Clean Your Tile Floors

Posted by Carpets N More under Tile

After investing in gorgeous tile floors for your home, you want to keep them beautiful and in pristine condition. To help you keep your floors in tip-top shape, we have created a fast and easy guide for cleaning your tile floors. Let us get started!

How to Properly Clean Your Tile Floors:

Step No. One: Sweep or Vacuum

You will want sweep or vacuum your tile floors regularly to remove any dirt or debris from the top layer. The dirt can eventually dull the look of your tile; therefore, regular upkeep will help it look better for longer.

Step No. Two: Mop.

In a large bucket, mix together mild detergent with hot water. After, you will want to mop your entire tile floors with rag or chamois mop. Avoid using a sponge mop for this surface because it can get your dirty water into your grout line.

  • Pro-Tip: You will want to frequently change out the mop water whenever it begins to get cloudy or murky.

Step No. Three: Focus on The Grout

Grout is an important part of the overall look of your tile. A lot of homeowners will not focus on cleaning the grout and this will leave the tile look grungy and unkept. In fact, your grout can absorb a lot of unwanted stains, oils, and greases, but the solution is easy. You will want to create a natural paste by mixing together equal parts baking soda and water. Once you have mixed the ingredients into a paste, you will want to take a toothbrush and scrub it into the stained area. Let this mixture sit on the grout overnight. In the morning, you will want to take a “stiff nylon brush” and scrub the grouted area. If stains continue to persist, you can buy a silicone-based grout sealer to help avoid future staining.

Disclaimer: Before ever cleaning any of your floors, you will want to consult with the manufacturer’s guidebook or website. Each flooring can be a little different and you always want to make sure you are using the correct method.

5 Great Ways to Give Your Fireplace a New Life

Posted by Carpets N More under Tile

Does your fireplace need a facelift? As the center of attraction, the fireplace provides a big design opportunity. Unfortunately, most homeowners are stuck with outdated fireplaces with poorly proportioned fireboxes, tacky fireplace doors. If you’re ready to remodel your fireplace and turn it into the focal point of the room, know that there are numerous design possibilities

From dramatic to subtle yet impactful designs you can remodel your fireplace on any type of budget. In some instances, a professional craftsman is necessary, but in most cases, you can complete yourself.

Refresh With Paint

If you’re working with a relatively small budget, applying a coat of paint to the surrounding wall can take your fireplace aesthetic to another level. Get creative with the paint color by selecting a bold hue that will complement the room’s interior. The color looks great when used only around the fireplace.

Use Texture

If you have more a minimalist style than you might want to use texture around your fireplace. You can replace traditional brick or marble tiles or stone from around the fireplace and use textured tiles.  When using textured tiles be sure to use a color that matches your walls for a polished look.

Accentuate with Artwork

Another budget-friendly way to upgrade the fireplace is to accentuate with art.  A grouped collection of prints can be just the thing to highlight the area.  To achieve the look you can use a series of your favorite art pieces with any theme.

Traditional Fireplace With A Twist

Enjoy the look of a traditional fireplace but still looking for a way to make it stand out?  Try playing with traditional elements and putting your own modern twist on it.  For instance, brick tiles around the fireplace is a staple design. You can add your own creative twist by arranging the brick tiles in a vertical orientation.

Statement Tile

Add a decorative flair to your fireplace by using surround it in a statement tile. Select a tile that features a vibrant hue or pattern. Keep the mantel knick-knack free so that the tile can stand front and center.

No matter what you choose for your own fireplace, we are happy to help.

What Kind of Floor Patterns Look Best in an Entryway?

Posted by Carpets N More under Tile

The entryway is the first thing that your guests will notice when they enter your home. Therefore, you should make a great first impression by implementing something unique in your design scheme such as an interesting floor pattern. There are a variety of enticing floor options available. So whether you choose to utilize natural hardwood, tiles or a combination of both on the entry floor you can create an impressive look for your entryway.

Use Borders Along the Entryway

A simple way to define the entry area is to use a border along the flooring. Borders are manufactured in all types of sizes, colors, and designs. Best of all, they blend seamlessly with different types of flooring materials. So whether you select hardwood, ceramic tiling or laminate flooring you can pair it with an enticing border.

The key to successfully using borders along the entryway floors is to install it a little bit away from the wall and square of the room. You can also opt to follow the shape of the wall. If you have tile floors, you may want to consider shifting the border from the outer edges to the interior. For instance, while you may install the tiles around the perimeter of the room you can lay them diagonally in the pattern.

Medallions and Accents

Yes, unique medallions and accents implemented in your floor is guaranteed to create that “pop” effect. Your guests won’t be able to resist looking down and enjoying this decorative piece. You can sparingly insert accents into your floor for a subtle yet noticeable effect.

Utilize Multi-Piece Patterns

Multi-pieced pattern borders can further enhance your entryway. This design makes use of various sized tiles or wood to create a pattern that’s in sync with your flooring. Select more beautiful multi-pieced patterns for eye-catching results. By using a plain, larger field tile alongside a small decorative piece you can create a “step pattern”. A step pattern is more exciting than the more common checkerboard pattern.

Set the stage for the rest of your home by creating a unique entryway!

Current Tile Trends

Posted by Carpets N More under Tile

Tile will always be in style, whether the look is classic or contemporary or anything in-between. But do you know about the latest looks available in the tile world today?  Find out the most popular trends in tile right now! Learn how to incorporate the latest fashion in your interior.

One of our favorite trends right now is placing tile on an entire wall in the kitchen. Who says backsplash should only be 18 inches high? Since backsplash is the jewelry of a kitchen, there is no reason to only use backsplash tiles in small portions. In other words start the backsplash at the counter top and install it all the way up to the ceiling. This looks especially good on the wall behind the range.

Typically, above the range there are few (if any) upper cabinets. This is the perfect location to showcase a beautiful tile backsplash! Apply this technique in kitchens with few upper cabinets (this is also trending as well). Run the tile behind floating shelves to really open up and beautify this space.

The classic chevron pattern has been showing up more and more in tile installation. This requires long skinny tiles. In the end the result is nothing short of stunning. A classic look is created in an eye catching manner. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Tile that appears to be other materials is enjoying the limelight. Due to huge advances in digital scanning and printing technology, porcelain tile can now be made to look like a wide variety of materials.  Long tile can look like wood planks (with the pattern scanned from a wide variety of wood species and finishes). Instead of installing a wood floor with the maintenance associated with its care, try porcelain planks!

No matter what trend speaks to you, we can help you with the process.  Visit us at Carpets N More and let us know what we can do for you!

What Type Of Grout Should I Use With Glass Tiles?

Posted by Carpets N More under Tile

There are a lot of different types of grout on the market today. Sanded, unsanded, epoxy, presealed – it can be difficult to figure out what type of grout to use with what type of tile. It’s important to use the right type of grout, however, to ensure that the installation looks right and lasts as long as possible.

Glass is very fragile with a low tensile strength. This means that it does not flex in any way and will crack instead. Therefore the grout and caulk joints in the installation need to do the bending and flexing for the glass. So your grout joints will typically not be any smaller than 1/8-inch, regardless of the size or style of the glass tile.

At 1/8-inch the grout joint begins to get large enough that it becomes more difficult to fill with a standard grout. Sand is used in this size joint and larger to help fill the joint and make it more stable. Most people get a little hesitant about using sanded grout with their glass tile – after all, won’t the sand scratch the glass? In most cases, the sand will not affect your glass at all. There are a few types of color backed glass tile that do need an unsanded grout; if this is the case, you salesperson should indicate it to you at time of purchase, or the tile should have instructions that includes this information.

In addition to the size of the joint, your grout needs to be able to flex as much as possible to protect the glass. Therefore, latex additive grout is usually recommended. The added latex will help the grout to bend without popping out of the joint or harming the glass it surrounds.

Occasionally, epoxy grout can also be used with some types of glass tile. Epoxy is hard to spread and work with, but it flexes and it fills up grout joints without scratching the glass. If you’re worried about mold and mildew in your bathroom, for example, epoxy grout can be a good option to use.

Think About Adding Slate

Posted by Carpets N More under Tile

Do you want to add architectural details to your home while still keeping a contemporary look? Slate can capture attention while still serving as a backdrop to dramatic colors and other design choices.

Take a look at how this grey slate wall provides drama without any color at all. The textures of the tiles capture the light and create the impression of a variety of shades without any actual change in color. The random layout almost makes it look like wrinkled paper, but with much more personality.

Slate comes in so many different shades and colors and this makes it extremely versatile. For example, without moving away from the grey theme, the photo below shows how making a few changes in layout and tone can change the look of a wall.

Instead of random rectangles, the repeating design wraps rectangular tiles around smaller squares. This look gains emphasis with the darker grey elements added to the design. This wall also hints at a bit of brown with some warmer grey tiles added into the mix.

Slate is not limited to grey. Colors range from brown, black, rusty reds, blues and gold. Collections take advantage of the best mixes of stones to create appealing color palettes.

Slate’s versatile nature allows it to work as flooring also. Because it looks even more beautiful when wet, it’s often used as a backdrop for waterfalls and fountains.

Would you like to learn more about this lovely and varied stone option? Our showrooms in Colorado and Nevada have great selections of slate choices. You may find just the right slate to add personality and drama to your own home.
