Posted by Carpets N More under Design and Decorating

Are you one of those homeowners who take interior design style seriously or you just love playing around with own unique style in your home’s decor? No matter what the case may be, we have a variety of bold design trends to share with you. These must-read tips are perfect for your current or next design makeover. We hope you enjoy!

Popular Design Trends:

  • Color – We love adding color to spaces because it brings homeowners happiness and creates neverending artistic possibilities! Designers are featuring bold colors as subtle pops of color in accessories, or they are pushing the boundaries by painting an entire room a mesmerizing, bright color. Take your pick, and match it to your comfort zone and design style.

  • Vintage StyleAre you more of a Hollywood glam person or a cozy, rustic-charm person? No matter what style you are drawn to, we love the vintage look and love combining a couple of different styles into our designs. If you are a rustic-charm type of person, focus on comfort and style. Whatever stylish antique pieces you add to your design, be sure that they are also cozy. For the Hollywood glam style, look for light fixtures with crystal adornments, satin bedding, and plush light-colored rugs or carpet. No matter what you choose, vintage style is a way to put your design style on your room without uttering a word!
  • WallpaperWallpaper is back, and we feel it will be around for quite some time. You can paper the entire room, one or two accent walls or even add wallpaper to the ceiling! Wallpaper has come a long way from the old paper by its means of being hung and for future removal, if desired. You can choose from thousands of patterns, styles, colors, and textures. We have always loved grasscloth wallpaper because it is subtle, expensive-looking and has its own particular texture. Grasscloth can be used in many interior styles like contemporary, traditional, and transitional. We recommend adding some gorgeous grasscloth wallpaper to your next design project for a stylish twist.

We wish you fun and lots of creative design freedom with your next design project, and we would love to hear your thoughts below in the comment section. Thanks for reading!

Selecting a Front Entryway Area Rug

Posted by Carpets N More under Area Rugs

Are you stumped and wondering what kind of area rug you should choose for your front entrance? At Carpets N More, we are here to help you get exactly the type of area rug you need for your front entryway. For help and advice, please see the tips and tricks we have listed below for choosing the perfect rug:

  • Rug Size – Make sure to take measurements of the entryway, and do not make the mistake of purchasing a rug that is too small or big for the room’s size. The proper size of the rug is based on the scale of the rug in comparison to the room. If the rug is too small, it will be overlooked and feel simply out of place. If the rug is too large, it will overtake the entire space and weigh down the room with its bulkiness.
  • Rug Placement – First, you will want to leave enough space between the rug and the bottom of the door. Thinner rugs will be more durable and long-lasting than a thick pile rug. Plus, a thin rug will be much easier to clean in a front entryway. Make sure you can open and close the door, so the rug does not interfere with the door’s function.
  • Rug Maintenance – Think about the type of debris being brought into the home. Do you experience a lot of rain and snow? Are you at the coast or desert bringing in sand? What about grass and leaves? Will you wash the rug or vacuum and clean periodically? The rug material also determines its care and maintenance. A wool or silk rug while durable, generally are spot cleaned or professionally cleaned. Most cotton rugs can be washed, but be aware they may shrink. Rayon and synthetic rugs with a rubber backing are best spot-cleaned. Natural jute rugs are maintained by sweeping and shaking out.
  • Rugs with a Pattern – If your entryway feels underwhelming, think about picking out a rug with a multi-colored pattern or design. They are excellent for camouflaging dirt, debris, and pet hair. The life of a patterned rug will be longer than a solid rug because visual wear patterns are not seen as easily.
If you are looking for further assistance, please visit us one of our beautiful locations and let our flooring specialist help you choose the perfect area rug for your front entrance.

How to Choose The Right Paint Color

Posted by Carpets N More under Design and Decorating

Has the time come that you are ready to paint your home? We would love to share some valuable tips with you to avoid common mistakes when choosing paint colors. Our helpful tips will eliminate any and all questions or concerns about choosing the right paint color! Let’s take a look!

How to Choose The Right Paint Color:
  1. Do Not Pick Your Color First – Determine what you are keeping in the room. Organize existing colors in the room starting with the flooring, furniture, window coverings, artwork, and area rugs. You will also want to take a look at how much natural light comes into the room. Consider how all these various colors play off each other and choose your color to support these multiple items. We recommend selecting your main wall color from an accent throw pillow, area rug or window coverings. If you pick your color first, you may end up limiting your choices for items that match.
  2. Consider the Entire Home – Think about walking from room to room and understanding that this flow is detrimental in the transition from each space. You will want the entire home to blend aesthetically from room to room. There should not be an awkward break in any space. Ideally, you will want each room to flow into the next. For example, you would not want to paint the kitchen red and have the family room be a neon green.
  3. Do Not Pick a Color Too Saturated or Bright – If you love red, we recommend not painting the entire room red because it will overpower the room. Instead, choose an accent piece like a lamp with a red base or red accent pillows to introduce the color into the room. Wall colors with a lighter more muted color like a gray work much better for the wall color. The last thing you want is for the paint colors to fight and clash with the other colors in the room.
  4. Your Emotional Goals, Do Not Overlook Them – It is essential to understand what tone you are trying to set for each space. For example, your bedroom should be a peaceful and relaxing retreat. When you enter the room, the visual goal is to decompress and relax preparing you for a restful night’s sleep. Choosing a bright saturated color will have the opposite effect. Think of using a more muted green, blue, lavender or gray paint colors to set the tone of tranquility. You can use this tip for any space. Take into consideration what kind of energy you what the space to evoke and go from there.
As always, we would love to hear your feedback and let us know how your painting project turns out, below in the comment section.

Decorating Guidelines

Posted by Carpets N More under Design and Decorating

You are never too old to learn a new skill. Whether you just moved into a new home or are looking to spruce up your current space, interior design is a great skill to master. Designing should be a fun way to express yourself throughout your home’s décor and theme. For beginners, it can sometimes feel like an overwhelming task to tackle with little to no experience; however, with some simple, easy guidelines, you can make your home beautiful all on your own.

  • Choose Colors and Consistencies
Decide what theme you want to give your room. The rule of thumb is incorporating one primary color that will account for sixty percent of the room’s color, one secondary color which will account for thirty percent of the room’s color, and an accent color that will account for the remaining ten percent. Applying this color theory to your room will help you keep a consistent theme. When deciding on your colors, look at a color wheel and determine what colors compliment one another. Decide if you want a neutral, dark, light, cool, or warm toned room. Once you discover your color theme,  be sure to stay consistent and do not stray from it.

  • Incorporate Intelligent Illumination
Lighting is an essential factor in a room. Natural lighting is ideal, but not always allotted to the room’s layout. Use an ambient light or overhead lighting style to cover the whole space. Also, be cognitive of spots that you may need task lighting or more lighting for hobbies you may be doing in the space. Another lighting option to incorporate is an accent light, which can help set the mood in the room. If your room lacks windows, remember to add some mirrors to the space to improve the way light travels.

  • First and Foremost: Function
Every space’s primary design goal should be the overall function and ease of use of the room. You do not want furniture or objects to be intrusive with the maneuverability of your area. Functionality should be your foremost concern in your interior design. Try to measure your space and decide what furniture can fit and what may make the room feel cluttered. “Less is more” can be a good, general rule to follow for beginners trying to design their space.

  • Be Bold, but Balanced
Do not be afraid to go bold in your space. Bold colors and focal points can really strengthen a room’s overall aesthetic appeal. Finding a balance of robust colors and subdued neutrals can help create a balanced look in the room and enhance the colors with contrast. Find colors that help accentuate the living space and create a livelier environment.

These general guidelines should be a good start to helping you design the perfect space. Remember the rules of “less is more” and color to make a powerful statement with your design theme. For more great tips and tricks, visit us at Carpets N More.

Backdrops and Accent Walls

Posted by Carpets N More under Design and Decorating

The three essential ways to change a room are lighting, walls, and flooring. With walls, usually the go-to is paint, but adding an accent wall or a backdrop wall behind a television or headboard can really enhance a room’s overall aesthetic. Adding a backdrop is a way to infuse your design style with a statement yet keeping a room still elegant and simple. Here are four backdrop ideas you should consider adding to your space to make a powerful statement:

Wood

Adding a wood backdrop can really make a room feel more cozy and warm. This is great to add into any room as your accent wall and looks very elegant and pristine. Most tones of wood are considered neutral, but you will want to be cognitive if a wood color clashes with the rest of your room. Some woods may have red or orange tones which may look out of place in a cool-toned room.

Tile

A backsplash of tile behind a television or in your bedroom can quickly make a room more enriched. Tile is associated with a classier atmosphere and looks great on the walls just as much as on the floor. Adding this to your home is a phenomenal way to make a statement and to help transform a bland room into a classy and sophisticated space.

Wallpaper

With so many styles and variations, you are sure to find the perfect complimenting wallpaper to accent a wall in your room. You can find wallpapers with woods, tiles, contemporary designs, subtle textures and much more. Putting wallpaper as a backdrop in your space can really transform a room’s overall appearance and draw eyes to a focal point. You can even use wallpaper on the backside of built-in cabinets for a stylish twist. The design options are truly endless.

Brick

Brick walls can be considered a rustic or even an industrial design approach. Exposing elements of construction in your design is an artsy way to enhance a room’s atmosphere. If your home has exposed brick, we recommend not cover it. Use this element to enhance the room and own its uniqueness. This is a perfect remedy to making a home feel fun and balanced with its architectural roots.

Backdrop and Accent Walls Always Help
Adding these accent walls can really help transform a room. Think of your accent wall as a focal point of the room and a pivotal point to reflect when adding décor to your space. Your backdrops can help bring balance to your space as well as enhance a room’s design.

Hygge is the experience or feeling you get when snuggling up at home in front of the fireplace sipping on hot cocoa while cuddling with your loved one. We have no word that describes it in the English language, but to the Danish, this is a crucial part of their defining culture. This pursuit for comfort is beyond being content or having wealth. Nautical Room

Posted by Carpets N More under Design and Decorating

What a pleasant experience being a sailor on the sea must be. Unfortunately, the unrivaled beauty of the vast seas is a trove of treasures not all men (and women) get the privilege of opening. The thought of these barnacle-encrusted caverns of boundless beauty being encompassed by the swaying, sapphire tides have turned this aqueous wonderland into a dreamt oasis that many long to have in their homes.

While you probably are not anticipating to sail away or move to these granulated shorelines, it does not mean you cannot embody to this beautiful, nautical oasis in your current home! Nautical-themed rooms borrow elements from lighthouses, ships, taverns, and even sea-bound myths to help encapsulate all the riches the deep blue has to offer. Set sail to unfurl your dry, lifeless room into a coastal-inspired harbor retreat awaiting adventure with these five nautical room tips:

Captivating Color
When picking your colors, try choosing blues and whites as the primary hues or find balance between both. You can take your room many different directions by which color you want as the primary while applying the other color as a secondary or accent color. Whites will open your space up and feel more shore-inspired while blue can darken the room and will have a more aquatic feel. Golds and reds are great accent colors to consider which compliment the nautical theme. Consider adding “natural beach colors” like sand, seafoam, navy blues, and even distressed woods. Blue and white stripped walls and rugs can help mimic the classic sailor uniform as well. Remember to compliment the hues of the colors you choose when picking out your furniture!

Washed Woods
Washed woods imply they have been “sea abused.” These woods are great tools to consider for adding character to the room and can also be incorporated in flooring, walls, furniture, and the ceiling. White-washed furniture will not only compliment the whites in your room but help with creating a lived-in environment. A decorative chest or shipyard trunk can make a beautiful coffee table. You can stick to all lights or add some darker distressed woods to give a pop. Do not feel limited to only washed woods though. Let your creativity flow when designing your room.

Ahoy!
Lighthouses and ships have a plethora of elements you can borrow in the design of your room. Try décor pieces like anchors, ores, ropes, ship bells, and compass. Hang ores on walls or make a rope rug to put under your coffee table. Sailboats can be placed around the room or used as accessories to the add to the design. Try to be fun and creative when integrating these elements. Mirrors inside of lifesavers is another fun and original design idea. Boat steering wheels can be mounted above a mantle or put a vinyl compass on the ceiling behind the fan. Incorporating nautical theme through boats and lighthouses is a definite way to complete your space.

Under the Sea
“Life’s always better, down where it’s wetter, take it from me” – said our infamous red, crustacean friend. Do not feel confided to keep your design limited to “above the sea” only. Bring this underwater world afloat by incorporating sea life into your project. Swordfish mounted above a fireplace is a timeless nautical application to add marine life to your room. Add life to your room, literally, by investing in a salt water fish tank! Un-anchor your mind and consider a variety of fun ways to add marine life to your room like murals of dolphins and paintings of whales. Seashell coasters or starfish décor are smaller, subtle nods you can consider adding.

Mysteries from the Depths
This is not necessarily for every nautical room but perhaps you would like to go a more mythological route when designing your space. Krakens and mermaids can be used in murals or pictures. Triton’s trident or Poseidon’s underwater palace can be used in art pieces to turn your room into a mythical realm. Some of the illustrious ideas will put a phantasmagorical ambiance through your room.

Being able to bring the nautical life home is a perfect remedy for ocean-loving fanatics! By incorporating colors of the seas and washed woods you can achieve the perfect nautical look. Bring the sea to your house this year by tailor a room to the classic nautical theme. For more tips and ideas, check out our Blog Hub

Floor Patterns

Posted by Carpets N More under Trends and Techniques

Our eyes are easily captivated by illustrious patterns and designs.  When installing flooring, you will want to think outside the box and integrate patterns in your home.  Whether carpet, tile, hardwood, or vinyl planking, there are endless patterns to incorporate into your home.  We put together a couple of our favorite patterns together for you to consider adding in your home.  Check with your sales representative to make sure that the pattern will work with the flooring you choose; not all planking can be interchangeable in the direction of installing.

Herringbone

This pattern’s name derives from the resemblance to the bones found in a herring fish.  With its zig-zag nature, it allows the room to not feel directional but enhances the design and openness of the room.  This is great to do with tile, luxury vinyl planking, or hardwood floors.  Some tongue and grooved flooring will not allow for this pattern, so check with your manufacture prior to purchase.

Checkerboard.

A checkerboard flooring pattern is a classic design. It adds an elegant variation to the room and looks great with vinyl composition tile in a garage or tiled backsplashes in a kitchen. The contrast between the pattern gives a room a timeless look that will not go out of style anytime soon.

Chevron

This pattern has been around for centuries and can be found in ancient art forms such as textiles, carvings, and pottery. Now being a classic style in the hardwood flooring industry, Chevron pattern gives a room an Italian-fashioned design that looks elegant with a twist of 17th-centuryFrench architect design. Add this to your home to have a pattern fit for a Queen.

Mosaic

Highly associated with tiled backsplashes, mosaic tile borrows elements anywhere from abstract to tradition with diverse geometrical patterns and styles available. This is great to add to pools, wall coverings, and floors. Mosaics are known for capturing visual elements of texture and drama into rooms making great focal points.

Which One Will You Choose?
All elements and patterns give a room a distinct feel and look. Contemplate what style compliments your style. Adding these patterns to your home will help turn your next flooring project into a grand masterpiece.

What Color Should I Paint My Space?

Posted by Carpets N More under Design and Decorating

Choosing a color for a room in your home can be a challenging process. Generally, there are a couple of simple guidelines to follow when adding color to your space. If you have a design theme already picked out, decide whether this theme calls for neutral, warm, or cool tones. If you already have preexisting furniture, rugs, or artwork, utilize them as a stepping stone to help you decide the route in which you may theme your space. If you have none of these, here are a couple of simple steps to help you pick the color for your next room design.

What Colors Do You Enjoy?
Try to figure out colors that make you happy in life. What color are you wearing? What color is your car? What is your favorite wardrobe apparel? Even if these colors are neutral, it gives you a solid base to start. The color that you have picked prior in your life is perfect influence your home design. Try to find colors that compliment each other as well. Generally, you do not want to apply more than three colors to a room, but this rule can be broken in some instances.

Exterior Insight on Interior Design
Another rule of thumb is having an insight into the outdoors. The earth is a dark tone, but as you look up at eye level, you see more moderate tones in the tree lines or surrounding areas. The brightest color is in the sky and where the light is generated from the outdoors. Using this principle indoors translates very well. You can apply darker colors to your flooring in your home and put your moderate tones on the walls. Save your bright whites for the ceiling or other colors that can help light reflect around the room with ease.

The Power of Neutrals
Colors are fundamental. They help convey feelings and allow us to express ourselves; however, neutrals have their purpose as well. Applying neutrals throughout the room can allow you more colors tones without swaying into warm or cool tones. Beiges and tans can be used to enable your other color choices to pop more. Black is essential to put in a room because it features absolute darkness which can make other colors stand out better. White is great too because it will allow light to flow with more ease around your space.

60-30-10 Principle
The last principle to understand is the 60-30-10 rule. Sixty percent of your space will be your dominant color while thirty percent will be your secondary color. This is used in marketing and great design themes. Lastly, ten percent should be your accent color. Being less prevalent allows this color to add a final touch of elegance.

Picking your color may seem challenging at first, but really it is a fun task to do. Once you have your color theme, stick to these general principles to help allow you to convey your personal touch in your home. For more tips and tricks, visit us at Carpets N More
