Understanding Vinyl Plank Flooring

Posted by Carpets N More under Flooring, Luxury vinyl tile

Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring has been storming the market for the past several years. Many homeowners and businesses have turned to this option of flooring for its superior durability and longevity. However, flooring investments may not be something you have done many times in your life. So why is LVP so incredible? Is it really worth the craze, and what should you look for in LVP? Not all vinyl planking flooring is created equal, but have no fear. We are here to help you identify some of the key attributes to look for in your LVP investments. Let’s take a look!

Wear Layer

When shopping for LVP, you will quickly notice many products have different mil layers. The thickness of your planks does not necessarily represent the durability and quality. The mil layer is a top coating typically of clear urethane. This layer is there to help protect the vinyl layer beneath it from becoming damaged. Most wear layers can protect from stains, scratches, and UV damage. The thicker the mil layer, the better protection, and longevity you can expect out of the floor. The mil layer is simply represented by the thousandths of an inch. Most commercial applications are required to have a twenty mil layer. Mil layers can range from as low as six mils to forty mils.

Water Proof

Many manufacturers will market vinyl planking as waterproof. Waterproof is a very complex marketing term. The amount of water needed to penetrate a floor and pressure can all be used to determine a floorings water resistance. Typically, almost all LVP flooring systems are waterproof. They make great flooring options for rooms that will have wet areas.   Some companies will go as far to market their floorings as hurricane proof! Understanding the quality of your specific flooring can help you best determine its best application. That being said, most LVP will work in any wet environment.

Underlayment

Most LVP floors are floating, interlock flooring systems. You want to ensure when you are shopping that you are comparing apples to apples. Some of these floors will have a built-in underlayment, while others may not. The problem comes when you compare prices of a floor with the built-in underlayment versus one that must be purchased separately. Make sure you compare final prices to both floorings.

When looking for the right LVP flooring, make sure to understand your flooring. Vinyl planking is an extremely versatile flooring, but not all LVP floors are created equal. Be sure to ask your Carpets N More sales representative for additional information. Thanks for reading!

Flooring Options for Rentals

Posted by Carpets N More under Flooring

The flooring you choose is a fundamental component of your home. Each flooring can generate a theme in the room as well as come with its own sets of functionalities. You want to make sure you are selecting the best flooring option for your home’s need. In a rental property, you want to find a cost-effective floor that can take a beating from your residents and does not need to be replaced repeatedly between renters. To help, here are three things you should know:

Appealing to the Masses

You want to find an aesthetically-pleasing floor to help close the sale on your home. Never pick a trendy flooring style for rental properties. While this may be your favorite flooring choice, tailoring your floor to the market is vital. Find out what other rental properties use in the surrounding areas.

Durability

Durability is also paramount. Ideally, you want the flooring to last longer than your tenants’ stay and into your next set of renters. However, this may not always happen. Look for durable, stain-resistant carpet if you decide to add soft flooring. If you want a more solid surface option, you have four primary contenders: tile, vinyl planking, solid hardwood, and engineered hardwood. Each has its pros and cons. Some of the floorings cannot handle high humidity or wet areas very well. Make sure you know which floorings are best in which environments before investing.

Affordability

Your next key factor will be affordability. You really need to invest in your market. Find out what is in homes that are renting around your area. “Cheaper” does not always mean it is best for the sale. Try to find an affordable flooring that can continue with the home because flooring is an investment which needs to last. However, do not overspend or personalize a rental to your own desire. While tile and hardwood may seem expensive, there are always less expensive versions of each.

Staying with uniform flooring in the home can help increase the chances of it being rented on the market. Study what renters are looking for in your area and tailor it to them. Never pick a trendy floor or a color that can deter renters. It is all about appealing to the masses while finding an affordable yet durable product.

Best Flooring Ideas for Commercial Spaces

Posted by Carpets N More under Flooring, Hints and Tips

Commercial environments are prone to heavy traffic.  The wrong flooring may wear quickly, fade, or even break down and increase the chances of injuries. As flooring professionals, we understand that these are all issues you want to avoid because investing in the wrong flooring will mean you will have to replace it more frequently.  To save time and money, you may want to consider some of these options for your business.  Every flooring comes with its pros and cons so you will want to decipher which flooring option is best tailored for your needs before making a purchase.

Carpet

The wrong carpet fibers will quickly wear and create many problems; however, carpet is not a bad option!  Carpet can be placed in some of the most substantial traffic areas in the world including malls and airports.  Commercial glue down carpet is a great solution to have carpet in heavy traffic atmospheres.  You can go a step further and invest in carpet squares.  Carpet squares are great because if one of them is damaged, you simply remove the tile and replace it with a new one.  This can help save you time and money.  However, carpet does not do well to water.  You will want to avoid environments with wet foot traffic.

LVP

Luxury Vinyl Planks or Luxury Vinyl Tiles are incredibly durable floors.  Most options can be floated directly over the subfloor which allows them to be installed in basements, over tile, or any unperfect floor.  Most LVPs are also waterproof and can be installed in water exposed areas.  These luxury planks can be very resilient to scratching and wear; however, they can still be scratched with extreme abuse.  Amongst being simple to install, very durable, and waterproof, this wonder floor is excellent for almost any application.  LVP is a very versatile flooring option and has been the largest growing floor in the industry to date.

Tile

Look for commercial grade tile.  The smaller the tiles, the less likely they will lead to cracking and breaking.  These floors have an extremely long wear layer, are treated to be stain resistant, and can be easy to clean.  Tile works great for commercial bathroom or any space you want to add a more luxurious feel.  Make sure you treat your floors properly to get the greatest longevity out of them.

Concrete

There are several different types of concrete floorings available from epoxy, urethane topcoats, poly-aspartic finishes, and more.  You may have noticed many commercial franchises and chains have been using this look in their designs.  Concrete is currently trending.  With the industrial look, concrete is extremely durable and with the right finish, can be very easy to clean.

Removing glue from your carpet can be challenging if you do not know the correct procedures.  Different adhesives bring different challenges and should be handled accordingly.  As you read earlier in the series, freezing glue is always a good tactic to try to harden it then scrape it off the fibers.  However, not all glue respond to this method.  While some heavy hitter glues are challenging, young folks bring some challenges of their own. Here are several common types of glue children may bring into the household that can create a tacky nightmare if not handled correctly:

Stickers

Sticker residue can be easy if caught early, but more challenging if it is matted deep into the carpet fiber.  Heat up white vinegar and dampen carpet residue.  Allow the area to soak for about ten minutes to break up the sticker residue.   You should be able to scrub out the sticker residue after it is broken down by the vinegar.   If some residue still remains, repeat the method.

Glitter Glue

Scrape away as much residue as possible.  If your carpet is solution dyed, it should be able to handle a bleach and water mixture.  This can help remove the stained color.  If you are unsure, test your carpet in a discrete area.  You can use the bleach and water mixture to remove to glue.  If some remains, apply ice to harden and scrape up to rest of the residue.

Super Glue

Super glue can be challenging to remove.  Apply acetone diluted with water to your carpet.  After you remove most of the super glue, go back and apply a mixture of distilled white vinegar, washing detergent, and hot water.   Scrub away at the super glue and pat dry.  This should remove the remaining sticky mess.

Like most stains, the sooner you can get to the accident, the better chance you have of removing the stain.  Do not let these sticky situations hold you down.  With some tender love and care, you can have your carpet looking like new again.  For more great tips and tricks, visit us our blog hub here and be sure to subscribe!

How to Prepare for Your Flooring Installation

Posted by Carpets N More under Flooring, Installation

Congratulations! You have made an excellent decision and bought brand new floors from Carpets N More. This is a fantastic step forward in the design process, and we are excited to a part of this journey with you. But before your installation, there are a few things that we recommend preparing. To help you get ready for the big day, we have created a guide with four easy steps to assist you. Let’s take a look!

Preparing for Your Flooring Installation:

1. More Furniture.

First, you will want to take all of the furniture out of the room where the flooring is being installed. It is a good idea to also remove all fragile items from the room. You will want to remove your wiring from electronics and store it in a different place. Also, you may find it to be a good idea to remove all of your bedding from your bedroom. This will help to ensure no dust and dirt gets inside of your clean sheets.

2. Vacuum Carpet/Clean Hardwood.

Next, you will want to vacuum your old carpet or clean off your hardwood floors before your installers come. By doing so, you will cut back on the amount of airborne dust and particles.

3. Hardwood/Laminate/Vinyl Installation.

You want your hard surface flooring to acclimate to your space; therefore, you want it to be delivered 48 hours in advance. You will want to set aside time and a space for the delivery as well as following the temperature and humidity guidelines for your flooring.

4. Be Available.

If any unforeseen circumstances arise, it is good to be available over the phone. We are not saying that these events are common, but in case we need you, we recommend turning on your cell phone during the installation.

We look forward to your installation day, and we are excited to show you your brand new floors. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us or visit us. We want to make sure that you are 100% satisfied and happy with your purchase.

Choosing the right entryway floor pattern will help set the tone for the overall design of your home.  This area of your living space will be the first thing that guests see; therefore, it can be the perfect opportunity to impress them with a unique and eye-catching display.  While there are multiple ways to draw attention to your home’s entrance through patterns and material choices, be sure to keep reading and learn how to ensure this spot in your home does not go unnoticed.

Shapes

If the thought of using multiple materials and tile shapes seems overwhelming to you, consider choosing a uniquely shaped tile or one that can be arranged in a pattern by itself.  A hexagon or fish scale shape will catch the eye by merely being an unexpected choice, or to create a design with an ordinary tile shape, you can use a long, thin rectangular tile and install it in a herringbone or basketweave pattern.

Bordered

A simple idea for adding distinction to your flooring is through the addition of a border.  This can be accomplished with tile or hardwood. Your border can be right around the perimeter of the room, or you can bring it in a few inches to make more of a statement.  For hardwood, simply use a different stain for your border pieces.  For tile, choose a border color that will complement not only the entryway but the rest of your home.  Inside the border itself, you can have the pieces arranged on a diagonal, parallel or perpendicular angle to the direction of your border.  It is your preference!

Sizes

Using different sizes of tile can help bring depth and style to an entryway design.  Using large white square tiles staggered with small black square tiles will keep the design looking symmetrical while preventing it from becoming boring.  You can also use three tile pieces of the same color in different shapes and sizes to create a pattern where each piece is locked into the other without grouping the similar ones too closely together.

Floor Medallion

For a real showstopper of an entrance, if you have a large enough room, consider a floor medallion.  This creates a focal point from which you can expand your floor’s design outward.  Since the attention should stay on this unique piece, you can keep the remainder of your flooring materials relatively simple.

Which floor pattern caught your attention? We would love to hear your thoughts below in the comment section. Thanks for reading!

Why We Love Black Marble

Posted by Carpets N More under Flooring, Marble

While white marble with black or grey veining will always be a classic, if you really want to make a statement, you may want to consider the richness of Nero Marquina marble. From the countertops to backsplashes, black marble is a luxurious material that can fit any budget. If we have piqued your interest, here are five ways you can take advantage of this often underrated material:

Coffee Table

The coffee table is often the center point of the living room. In most traditional living rooms settings, we are used to seeing glass or wood-based coffee tables. If you are looking for a subtle yet powerful way to use black marble, consider using a black marble coffee table. A dark stoned coffee table makes for a sophisticated conversational piece. A black marble table with white veining is also an option to add a flair of fashion to the space.

Kitchen Countertops

Dare to be different by steering clear of the white on white design scheme that we often see today in the kitchens. Contrast with dark, marble countertops with or without veining. Dark stone countertops also look great against deep hued cabinetry such as burgundy or dark teal. You can bring a hint of light to a dark theme with metallic accents or a light backsplash.

Bathroom

White is a popular color scheme in the bathroom since it provides an ultra fresh and clean look, but we believe that there is nothing sleeker than black stone. You can use a black-based stone against the wall over the sink, as an accent wall in the shower stall, or feature a black marble countertop. Whatever style you choose, black marble can create a dynamic look for your bathroom.

Fireplace

Are you looking for a way to accent the fireplace? A classic black marble fireplace surround is guaranteed to make the fireplace feel elegant, not to mention it will instantly become the focal point of the room.

Flooring

Want to create high drama in your home? Considering going with black marble for your flooring choice. Dark stone flooring provides a true sense of gravity. Forget the accent rugs, just add a polish finish to reflect more light and let the floors talk volumes.

What do you think about the Nero Marquina marble look? Are you sold on the idea? We would love to hear your thoughts below in the comment section.

Best Flooring Options for Seniors

Posted by Carpets N More under Flooring

When it comes to picking the right floor seniors, you will need to consider a few variables.  First, not all floors are alike and can all have different positive and negative attributes. Second, some key factors to consider are maintenance, absorption, mobility, slip-resistance, and comfort.  To help you make the right decision, we put together a list of several flooring options to consider.  Decide what you are looking for out of your floor and what will be the best option for you.

Cork

Cork is an excellent choice.  It is a low-maintenance solution to accommodate the needs of seniors.  It offers superior sound absorption and thermal insulation.  It is slip-resistant as well as a perfect resolution for wheelchairs, walkers, and canes.  Cork flooring has a little more cushion to it to which can help with falls; however, it is also so soft it can easily be damaged.

Rubber Flooring

Though it is not people’s first thought to add to a home, rubber flooring is an excellent floor for absorption.  It is one of the safest options you can get because it is both slip-resistant and soft on drops and falls.  This comfortable solution can come with a little more of a price increase and has the drawbacks of not having a large option of residential styles and designs.

Carpet

Low-profile carpet is good for comfort and provides protection against getting hurt from a fall.  It may be a little bit more demanding on maintenance and cleaning. It also holds dust more easily, and this can be a problem with adults who suffer from allergy problems. Also, it may not be easy for room maneuverability with wheelchairs.

Luxury Vinyl

This choice is an easy-to-clean solution.  It is highly resistant to spills and looks great as well.  Luxury Vinyl is great for dust control and extremely durable. It may not be the friendly option for falls and its surface can be relatively hard and unforgiving.

The Decision Is Yours

Try to avoid tile flooring because they are injury prone and do not always offer slip-resistance.  We understand that deciding the perfect flooring for seniors can be challenging.  We recommend weighing out the pros and cons of each flooring prior to your decision.  If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to call or visit us.
